our ethics
Brightening lives, one stitch at a time
At Smock London, we passionately believe business should be a force for good. Every decision we make is guided by a desire to create something meaningful for the craftswomen who bring our designs to life, the women and girls who wear our clothes, and the world we share.
people at our heart
We choose to work slowly and intentionally, partnering with craft communities where shared values and close partnership shape every piece we create. We believe in respectful and responsible working practices rooted in fair and equitable employment, good working conditions, and safe environments. We do not condone child labour, forced labour, or exploitation of any kind.
Practised within their homes and communities, hand smocking allows work to unfold in harmony with the natural rhythm of daily life, offering flexibility and autonomy that respects family, home, and the many responsibilities women hold beyond their craft. Through this work, hand smocking also provides a meaningful and flexible source of income, enabling our craftswomen to support their families and invest in the futures of their children and grandchildren, while sustaining skills carried forward through generations. We make an annual trip to personally visit our artisans. Please see Meet The Artisans to get to know the team.
Responsible Practices
We are committed to responsible and ethical practices across our supply chain, guided by the UN Women’s Empowerment Principles, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the principles of the World Fair Trade Organisation.
our impact
We make decisions that protect the dignity of the craftswomen who craft our pieces, while reducing waste and environmental impact. In practice, this means fair and respectful partnerships, safe working conditions, responsible production in limited quantities, honest storytelling, and holding ourselves accountable by tracking progress.
For every Smock London purchase, a donation is made to support a child or woman in need within our artisan communities. These contributions are directed towards trusted local organisations and initiatives that focus on education, wellbeing, and long term opportunity for women and children. Through these donations, we support the women behind our collections and contribute directly to the communities they are part of, reflecting our commitment to craft, community, and care. As Smock London grows, so too does our ability to give back.
